Article: How private autograph signings work
How private autograph signings work
A private autograph signing lets you get a celebrity autograph without standing in a convention line. You place an order, the talent signs in a private session with the SWAU team in the room, and your piece comes home with a SWAU Witness hologram that records who signed it, when and where. Here’s how the whole process works, start to finish.
What a private signing is
At a SWAU private signing, the talent signs collectors’ items away from the public, and every signature is witnessed by SWAU as it happens. That’s the difference from buying an autograph after the fact: nobody has to work out later whether the signature is real, because someone from SWAU watched it go on the item. You can see what’s open right now on the Autograph Signings page.
Option 1: pre-order an item SWAU supplies
Most collectors start with a SWAU provided photo. On the signing’s order page, choose SWAU Provided Photo and follow the link to the photos available for that signing. Each photo has its own code, such as SWAU-RDJ-01. Copy that code into the Photo ID box, then pick your size. Photos come in 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 inches.
Pre-order items are available while supplies last. If one sells out, SWAU tries to restock it, so it’s worth checking back.
Option 2: send in your own item
You can also send in something from your own collection. When you order, pick the category that matches your item. A flat Funko Pop box counts as a flat item up to 11x14, while a full Funko box with the figure inside counts as an action figure. Plaques without stands are flat items, and pieces of masks, gloves or larger props go under large props.
Once you’ve ordered:
- Print your receipt and put it in the package.
- Label each item with the signer’s name, your pen color and where you’d like the signature. Our guide to getting your items ready for a SWAU send-in walks through it.
- Pack everything securely and mail it to the send-in address on the signing’s order page.
Each order page lists two deadlines: the last day to order and the day your item needs to reach SWAU. If you’re sending a large or heavy prop, you cover the extra cost to ship it back. For more on prep, see how to prepare an item for an autograph signing.
Pens, inscriptions and personalization
You don’t need to send a pen. SWAU keeps paint pens and regular pens on hand in nearly every color. Only send one if your item needs something specific, like a piece of artwork or an unusual surface. For SWAU provided items, use the Ink Color field to say what you’d like, for example “Blue in the top right.”
Many signings also offer extras:
- Personalization: the talent writes your name, as in “To John.”
- Character name: the role they played, such as “Tony Stark.”
- Quote: a line from one of their films. Quotes have a word limit, so keep yours under it.
You can also upload a reference image showing exactly how you want your photo signed. It’s optional. Without one, the team follows your Ink Color notes or uses its judgment to get your item signed as well as possible.
What happens on signing day
For the safety of the talent, the team and your items, SWAU doesn’t share the date or location of a signing ahead of time, and signings aren’t filmed. The team does take photos during the session and shares them on SWAU’s social channels afterward.
Every item is signed in front of SWAU, then gets a SWAU Witness hologram, free of charge. The hologram is packed with over a dozen anti-counterfeit measures and carries its own serial number and QR code.
After the signing: shipping and verifying
When a signing is done, SWAU announces it on swau.com and social media. Shipping usually starts about two weeks later, and you’ll get an email with tracking when your order ships. Pre-orders typically take a few months from order to doorstep, so it pays to be patient. If your order includes more than one signing, it’s held until all of them are done so everything ships together. You can follow each step on the signing status page.
When your piece arrives, scan the hologram or enter its serial number at swau.com/verify. You’ll see who signed it, when and where. Witnessed by SWAU. Guaranteed for life.
Want to add a second name to an item that’s already with SWAU? Use the “Add to Existing SWAU order” option on the next signer’s order page.
How to hear about upcoming signings
New signings and deadlines are posted on the Autograph Signings page and announced by email and on social media. Bigger signings can sell out, so if there’s a name you’ve been waiting for, order early. Past signings live on in our celebrity collections, like Tom Holland, Pedro Pascal and David Corenswet, and the full range is on the Celebrity Autographs page.
